University of Galway today announced that Professor David J. Burn has been appointed the 14th President of the University with effect from the 8th of September 2025. Professor Burn will succeed Professor Peter McHugh who has held the position on an interim basis since September 2024. Professor Burn has served as Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Newcastle University since 2017, where he led transformative change initiatives to restructure faculty, accelerate research performance, advance equality, diversity and inclusion and drive internationalisation. David is also Professor of Movement Disorders Neurology and Honorary Consultant Neurologist for Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust. Professor Burn serves as Director of an Academic Health Science Centre, the Newcastle Health Research Partnership, which works to deliver improvements to health and wellbeing for the over three million people living in the Northeast of England and North Cumbria. Professor Burn is also President-elect of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society. Commenting on his appointment, Professor David J. Burn said: “I am delighted and honoured to have been appointed as the next President of University of Galway. Although born and bred in the Northeast of England, I have had a strong personal connection to Ireland for over 35 years and am therefore no stranger to its rich heritage and vibrant culture. I look forward to working with all staff and students to help University of Galway further realise its incredible potential and am excited about what we can achieve together.”

LIfT BioSciences secures €12 million to tackle cancer treatment resistance with neutrophil therapy. The London-based biotech received Ireland's largest-ever Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund grant to advance their Immuno-Modulatory Alpha Neutrophils (IMANs) through clinical trials. Working with University of Galway and Hooke Bio Ltd., LIfT will test this first-in-class therapy on patients with metastatic cervical and head/neck cancers who've exhausted standard treatments. IMANs use the body's neutrophils—natural first responders—to recognize and destroy cancer cells through advanced threat pattern recognition. This approach targets tumor escape mechanisms responsible for over 90% of cancer deaths, potentially delivering lasting immunity where other treatments fail. Clinical trials are expected to begin in Q4 2026, testing progressive doses before combining with checkpoint inhibitor therapy. The funding positions Ireland at the forefront of next-generation cancer immunotherapies. Ground-breaking first-in-human cancer cell therapy trials to start in Galway. Clinical researchers are set to launch immune-cell therapy clinical trials aimed at tackling treatment resistance in solid tumour, supported by a €11.9 million grant from the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund. The project is being spearheaded by a consortium from LIfT BioSciences, University of Galway, Galway University Hospitals, and Hooke Bio Ltd. The funding award, announced by Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Peter Burke T.D., and Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless T.D., is the largest single grant awarded by the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund to date, with €5.9 million in direct funding going to University of Galway. The consortium will launch the first-in-human clinical trials of a ground-breaking neutrophil-based cancer immune-cell therapy developed by LIfT BioSciences, a client of údarás na Gaeltachta with an Irish base in An Spidéal, Co.
